Alibaba is one of the first websites many Nigerians hear about when they want to import from China. It is popular for a reason: you can find factories, trading companies, wholesalers, custom manufacturers and ready-to-ship products in almost every category. But Alibaba is not a magic button. If you treat it like Jumia or Amazon, you can easily overpay, order the wrong specification, lose money to a weak supplier, or ship goods that cannot sell in Nigeria.
This guide explains how to buy from Alibaba and ship to Nigeria safely in 2026. It is written for Nigerian importers who want a practical process, not generic theory. If you are completely new to importation, start with our main guide on how to import from China to Nigeria, then come back here for the Alibaba-specific steps.
Is Alibaba good for Nigerian importers?
Yes, Alibaba can be useful for Nigerian importers, especially when you are buying business quantities, customizing products, comparing several suppliers, or building a long-term supply chain. It is stronger for wholesale and manufacturer sourcing than for one-piece personal shopping.
Alibaba is not always the cheapest source. For many everyday wholesale goods, Chinese domestic platforms such as 1688 may be cheaper, but 1688 is harder for foreigners because of Chinese language, RMB payments and local logistics. We explained that route separately in how to buy from 1688 and ship to Nigeria safely. Alibaba is usually easier for beginners because many suppliers can communicate in English, issue proforma invoices, and accept international payment methods.
Step 1: Decide exactly what you want to import
Do not start by searching random products. Start by writing a simple buying brief. Your brief should include the product name, target quality level, quantity, material, size, color, packaging, branding requirement, plug type if it is electrical, expected selling price in Nigeria, and your maximum landed cost.
For example, "power bank" is too vague. A better brief is: 20,000 mAh power bank, real capacity, lithium polymer battery, type-C input/output, fast charging, UK plug charger not included, black color, English packaging, 300 pieces trial order, target landed cost below a specific naira amount. This level of clarity protects you from suppliers who quote cheap prices for weak specifications.

If you already have Alibaba or China website links and want Sure Imports to handle the purchase process, use our Buy From Chinese Websites service. For bulk company orders, branded staff items, promotional merchandise or project-based sourcing, start from our Corporate Sourcing service.
Step 2: Search Alibaba with buyer-intent keywords
Use specific search terms. Instead of searching "bags", search "waterproof school backpack manufacturer", "custom lunch bag wholesale", or "laptop backpack factory". Instead of "phone accessories", search "MFi certified iPhone cable manufacturer" or "20W USB-C charger UK plug wholesale". The more specific your search, the easier it is to compare real suppliers.
Open at least 10 supplier profiles before messaging anyone. Check the number of years on Alibaba, verified supplier badges, product range, response rate, transaction history, certifications, factory videos, company name and location. A supplier selling solar panels, wigs, phone cases and blenders from the same profile is often a trading company, not a specialist factory.
Step 3: Understand factory vs trading company
A factory makes the product. A trading company buys from factories and resells. Trading companies are not automatically bad. Some are useful when you need low MOQ, mixed products, English communication or consolidation. But if you need custom manufacturing, strict quality control or repeated volume orders, you should know whether you are dealing with the actual manufacturer.
Ask direct questions: Are you the manufacturer or trading company? Can you show your business license? Can you send a factory production video with today's date? Can you support third-party inspection? What is your real MOQ for branded packaging? What tests have been done on this exact product?
We covered this problem in more detail in Trading Company vs Real Manufacturer in China. Read it before sending large deposits.
Step 4: Message suppliers like a serious buyer
Weak messages get weak replies. Do not write "how much?" and expect a proper quotation. Send your buying brief and ask for a structured quote. Your message should request unit price, MOQ, sample cost, production time, packaging details, carton size, carton weight, payment terms, warranty, certificate availability and nearest port or pickup city.
Carton size and weight matter because your shipping cost can change the entire profit calculation. Before choosing a supplier, compare the actual landed cost, not only the Alibaba unit price. If you have never calculated this before, read how to use the landed cost estimator for China imports and how to calculate CBM and volumetric weight.
Step 5: Do not trust price alone
The cheapest Alibaba quote is often cheap for a reason. It may use lower grade material, weaker packaging, smaller capacity, generic components, no warranty, inaccurate photos, or a specification that only looks similar online. For electronics, machines, beauty devices, power products and safety-sensitive goods, the cheap option can become the most expensive mistake.
Ask for a specification sheet and compare line by line. If a supplier cannot explain the difference between models, avoid them. If they rush you to pay today, avoid them. If they refuse inspection, avoid them. If the price is much lower than every other quote, investigate before celebrating.
Step 6: Order samples when the product risk is high
For branded products, electronics, beauty devices, machine parts, fashion items, packaging-sensitive goods and anything you plan to reorder, samples are not a luxury. They help you confirm quality before mass production. A sample may cost more than the unit price because it includes handling and courier costs, but it can prevent a container of disappointment.
When you receive a sample, test it like a customer in Nigeria. Check material, finishing, odor, stitching, battery life, plug type, English instructions, packaging strength and whether the item matches your market positioning. If you want to build your own brand, our guide on building white label products in China for the Nigerian market will help you think beyond a one-time purchase.
Step 7: Use safe payment methods
Alibaba promotes Trade Assurance as a way to protect orders placed and paid through Alibaba's system, subject to the order terms and platform rules. It can be useful, but it does not replace proper supplier verification. The protection is only as strong as the written order details. If your order says "bags" with no specification, you have made your dispute harder before it starts.
Make sure your Alibaba order clearly states product model, material, quantity, color, logo, packaging, production time, inspection requirement, shipping handover terms and refund conditions. Avoid paying personal bank accounts, random WhatsApp contacts or third-party names that do not match the supplier you are dealing with.
Many Nigerian importers also need help paying Chinese suppliers in RMB, USD or through local Chinese channels. If you are not sure how to pay, do not improvise. Use a verified payment or procurement process so your money and supplier records are traceable.
If your supplier is already confirmed and you only need help making supplier payment in China, sign in and use Pay Supplier. It is built for importers who already have a supplier and need Sure Imports to help process the supplier payment properly.
Step 8: Inspect before shipping
Inspection is where many importers try to save money and later lose more. If you are buying business quantity, inspect before the goods leave China. At minimum, confirm quantity, product appearance, labels, packaging, carton marks and obvious defects. For technical products, inspect function, power rating, accessories and key measurements.
For machines, insist on a proper test run. We wrote specific guides on why some suppliers avoid factory test runs and what a real factory test run should look like. The same thinking applies to many non-machine products: verify before the goods enter the shipping chain.
Step 9: Choose air, sea or express shipping
The right shipping method depends on weight, volume, product value, urgency and cash flow. Air freight is faster and better for smaller, higher-value goods. Sea freight is slower but better for bulky or heavy goods. Express courier can work for samples and urgent small parcels, but it is rarely the cheapest option for commercial quantities.
Do not ask "how much is shipping?" without carton details. A serious shipping quote needs product type, carton size, gross weight, number of cartons, pickup city in China, destination in Nigeria and whether customs clearing is included. For current planning logic, read cost of shipping from China to Nigeria and air freight vs sea freight.
Step 10: Prepare for customs and regulated products
Some goods need extra documentation or regulatory checks before they can be imported or sold properly in Nigeria. Food, cosmetics, medical products, chemicals, electrical goods, telecom devices and branded goods can carry additional risk. Do not buy first and ask customs questions later.
Before paying a supplier, confirm whether the product needs SONCAP, NAFDAC, NCC approval, special labeling, restricted import checks, or brand authorization. If you skip this step, the goods may become expensive to clear or impossible to sell through formal channels.
Common Alibaba mistakes Nigerians should avoid
The first mistake is buying from screenshots instead of specifications. The second is paying a supplier outside a traceable process. The third is ignoring carton size until shipping day. The fourth is assuming every "verified" profile is the actual factory. The fifth is skipping inspection because the supplier sounded friendly. The sixth is using selling price in Lagos to judge profit without calculating duty, freight, clearing, local delivery, returns and damaged units.
If you are worried about fraud, read how to avoid scams when importing from China to Nigeria. Most scams are not mysterious. They happen because the buyer rushes, skips verification, accepts vague invoices or trusts a stranger more than a process.
When should you use a procurement agent?
Use a procurement agent when the order is large, the product is technical, you need multiple suppliers consolidated, you need RMB payment support, you need inspection, or you cannot afford trial-and-error. A good procurement agent should help you verify suppliers, compare quotes, check samples, supervise production, inspect goods and coordinate shipping.
We explain our process in China procurement agent for Nigerian importers. The point is not to make importing look complicated. The point is to remove blind spots before your money is already committed.
For ready links from Alibaba, 1688 or other Chinese websites, the most direct route is Buy From Chinese Websites. For company procurement, branded gifts, staff packs or bulk business requirements, use Corporate Sourcing so the project can be scoped properly before purchase.
Final checklist before you pay on Alibaba
Before sending money, confirm the supplier identity, exact specification, total quantity, unit price, packaging, production time, carton details, inspection plan, payment terms, shipping plan, customs risk and landed cost. If any of these are unclear, pause. A serious supplier will answer serious questions. A weak supplier will pressure you to move fast.
Alibaba can be a strong sourcing channel for Nigerians, but only when used with discipline. Treat every order like a business decision, not a shopping experiment. Verify first, calculate properly, inspect before shipping, and link your buying decision to the realities of the Nigerian market.
