Charging an EV with a Generator in Nigeria: Compatibility and Real Costs
Assess generator charging using manufacturer specifications, official diesel prices, fuel-cost calculations and a practical installation checklist.

Generator charging can be a useful contingency, but it needs two separate checks: whether the generator installation can correctly supply the vehicle’s charger, and whether the resulting electricity cost makes sense. A generator’s advertised kVA figure does not answer either question by itself.
Sure Imports EVs come with a wall-mountable charger for standard Nigerian mains electricity. That does not establish compatibility with every generator. The exact charger manual and a qualified installer’s assessment are needed before relying on a generator connection. This guide provides a specification checklist and a documented fuel-cost example; it is not a wiring procedure.
What must be confirmed for generator charging?
- Continuous output: use the generator’s applicable continuous/prime kW rating and operating conditions, not only its peak or standby kVA label.
- Shared loads: account for the building’s other equipment and its changing demand.
- Supply quality: confirm voltage, frequency and waveform quality under the proposed load against the charger’s requirements.
- Electrical protection: have the installer verify earthing, neutral arrangements, protection and source switching for the complete installation.
- Phase allocation: a three-phase generator’s total output is not automatically available to one single-phase charger.
- Approval: obtain confirmation for the exact charger and generator arrangement, and agree a commissioned load test.
Victron’s manufacturer generator guidance explains why generator sizing and power quality affect inverter/charger operation. It concerns Victron equipment, not a blanket approval for our vehicles. We use it to support the need for a system assessment, not to transfer its settings to an unknown charging pile.
Do not bypass a charger fault
If a charger refuses generator power, record the fault and stop the session for assessment. Do not defeat earth monitoring, improvise neutral-earth connections or connect a generator in a way that can backfeed the mains. A system that powers lights is not thereby proven suitable for EV charging.
For portable generators, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends outdoor operation at least 20 feet—about six metres—from homes, with exhaust directed away. Never run one in a garage or enclosed charging area. Follow the equipment’s siting and operating instructions; fixed installations need their own engineered exhaust and ventilation arrangement.
A generator-cost example using published fuel consumption
Caterpillar’s DE22E3 data sheet, document LEHE2064-03 (March 2022), gives a 50 Hz prime rating of 16 kW. Its published fuel consumption is 2.9 litres/hour at 50% load, 3.9 at 75%, and 5.3 at 100%. Read the manufacturer data sheet hosted by Cat dealer Avesco. This is an economics example, not a recommendation to buy that generator or confirmation of a single-phase charging configuration.
The NBS May 2026 diesel report records a national average of ₦3,277.47/litre. It is a dated observed average, not today’s guaranteed pump price. Sources checked on 28 September 2026.
Fuel-only electricity cost = litres/hour × ₦/litre ÷ electrical kW delivered.
| Published prime-load point | Electrical output | Fuel consumption | Calculated fuel-only cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50% | 8 kW | 2.9 L/hour | ₦1,188.08/kWh |
| 75% | 12 kW | 3.9 L/hour | ₦1,065.18/kWh |
| 100% | 16 kW | 5.3 L/hour | ₦1,085.66/kWh |
These are calculations at the manufacturer’s stated test points, not a measured Nigerian charging session. They exclude servicing, oil, repairs, depreciation and distribution losses. The sheet’s operating limits also matter: a full-load data point is not permission to run indefinitely outside the specified duty.
What does that mean for a vehicle?
If a vehicle requires an assumed 0.25 kWh/km at the charging supply, electricity at the 75% example point costs about ₦266.29/km in generator fuel alone. The same assumed consumption at the actual ₦209.50/kWh A–Non-MD sample in NERC’s September 2026 IE Ogun tariff table costs about ₦52.38/km before separate billing charges. Tariff source, page 7.
If the generator supplies other loads, the table represents average cost per generated kWh at that total operating point. Do not allocate its whole fuel bill to the car while also billing the building for the same fuel. Equally, do not call EV charging free because the generator was already running: measure incremental consumption or apply a transparent allocation.
A practical acceptance test and operating record
Have the installer commission the arrangement with the expected building loads present. Record the charger setting, session energy, generator running time, fuel used and any interruptions. Use a meter at the charging supply where practical, and compare repeated sessions rather than one brief demonstration.
Keep generator charging as a separately priced scenario in your buying decision. Our ownership-cost comparison shows why heavy generator dependence can change the result. For a daytime alternative, read solar charging: capacity, storage and cost.
